    What it is

Coast FIRE is the milestone where the money you've already invested will grow into your full FIRE number by retirement on its own — no further contributions needed. After that you only have to earn enough to cover today's living costs.

This calculator finds your coast number today and the age you're on track to reach it.

    How the math works

    FIRE number
Annual expenses ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate (25× expenses at a 4% SWR).
    Coast number
FIRE number discounted back to today at your real return: FIRE ÷ (1 + real return)^years to retirement.
    Real return
Annual return − inflation, compounded monthly, so everything is in today's money.
    Coast age
The age your portfolio (with current contributions) first meets the coast target for that age.

    Assumptions & caveats

    • Returns are assumed steady; real markets vary year to year.
    • Expenses and the FIRE number are expressed in today's purchasing power (real returns).
    • Contributions stop mattering for the target once you reach Coast FIRE, but you still need income for living costs.
    • Taxes and one-off costs are not modelled.

    Frequently asked questions

Regular FIRE means your portfolio fully covers your expenses now. Coast FIRE means it will cover them by your target retirement age without further saving — you've 'front-loaded' your retirement.

You can stop investing for retirement and use that money to work less, switch to a lower-paying but fulfilling job, or simply spend more — your retirement is already on autopilot.

More years until retirement means more compounding, so a smaller amount today grows into the same FIRE number.

It's optional. Continuing to invest brings full FIRE (retire now) closer, but reaching Coast FIRE already removes the pressure to save for retirement.
